Wahakura - Safe Bed-sharing

Announced at the Mokopuna Ora Hui held at Orakei Marae, the Wahakura is a kaupapa initiated by Dr David Tipene-Leach. This is an initiative Nga Maia Maori Midwives Aotearoa is working towards supporting throughout the Motu/country alongside our whanau, Midwives, Maori SIDS, Maori community providers and weavers.

"A wahakura is a woven flax bassinet for infants up to 5-6 months of age. This return to a traditional Maori way of sleeping babies creates a safe sleeping space for your baby and helps reduce the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) and prevents accidental suffocation. It also promotes breast-feeding and bonding with baby".

We harvest local harakeke, specially planted for weavers.  We clean and prepare each blade of harakeke carefully before weaving.  We have a personal policy to ensure that we are personally in good space while weaving so that only good thoughts go into our mahi.

The photographs are examples of our mahi and we have the approval and backing of Doctor David Tipene Leech (expert in the field of Wahakura and Safe Sleeping which leads to a reduction of SUDI).

We also weave for our local DHB (Hawkes Bay).
